Femmemechanics: Grrreasetime!

Grrreasetime! is an open shop time created in partnership with local shops and community groups. Monthly Grrrease Times are hosted at Somerville Bike Kitchen. Upcoming events can be found on Facebook, Instagram, or by signing up for the monthly newsletter.

Open shop time provides a space for FTW cyclists to work on their bikes, with assistance and guidance available to teach what is needed. Whether someone is an experienced mechanic, total beginner, or somewhere in between, this space is for everyone! The goal is to help participants learn how to fix their own bikes, rather than fixing them for them. Whether there is a specific project in mind or just a desire to learn, all are welcome to come by.

During open shop, bike stands are first come, first serve, and not everyone might be able to get their bike in a stand, but every effort will be made. The aim is to have the tools in participants' hands and encourage learning together.

Babes Bike Boston 2024

Register now! Babes Bike Boston 2024 will be on Sunday, July 14. BBB is Boston’s alleycat for + by femme, trans, non-binary, and women cyclists.

The race will be on Sunday, July 14th, with registration at 12:30PM and the race starting at 1PM at Somerville Bike Kitchen/The Dojo.

Originating with bike messengers, alleycats test not only your speed but your knowledge of the city and ability to create an efficient route to hit different checkpoints throughout the city. Some checkpoints will have activities you must complete before moving on. Babes Bike Boston encourages riders of all abilities to participate, go at your own pace, hit as many checkpoints as you can, and most importantly have fun! While we’ll have awards for the fastest riders, we’ll also have some award categories that aren’t all about speed (like the first to finish on a BlueBike and the “most fun” award).

They'll give you ground rules to make sure you feel comfortable and safe sharing as much of yourself as possible while still feeling in complete control of how much you divulge.

There will be food and drinks for sale!

Somerville Porch Fest

Somerville Porch Fest

This past fall, despite Covid, Somerville Arts Council relaunched PorchFest.

As a reminder, the Arts Council does not provide match making, bands should be performing on their own porches or porches of invited hosts.  You should not register to "find" a place or host.  It is the responsibility of the host (or the band) to ensure you are being neighborly and respectful by informing neighbors of your intent to perform.  You are performing on your own private property not public streets or sidewalks.

Bands and hosts may register now; the deadline to register is Thursday, May 12th. Similar to prior years, to ensure guests can move orderly through the city and view the music, porches located West (west of Willow) will perform during the slot from 12-2; Central (from Willow to Central) from 2-4; East (east of Central) from 4-6.   If you are performing for a shorter duration in that time slot, use the "time" field to qualify that specific time.
